Princeton Elm Ulmus americana ‘Princeton’

Large-sized | Deciduous | Height: 50-70ft. | Spread: 30-50ft.

This vase-shaped tree is extremely adaptable and thrives in a variety of conditions.

While it prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil, is tough enough to handle a wide range of urban soil conditions, including poor soils, wet soils, and occasional drought. Once established, it is extremely hardy. This elm is resistant to Dutch Elm disease that was responsible for decimating the American Elm population in the 1900s.

The leaves are simple with a toothed edge, and lop-sided leaf base. Its dark green foliage turns a beautiful yellow-gold in the fall.

The Princeton Elm attracts many migrant bird species. The tree can live 200 – 300 years, and older trees can support diverse insect communities, which in turn provide food for birds. It is a larval host to the Eastern Comma, Mourning Cloak, Question Mark, and Painted Lady butterflies.
